What is CBG (Cannabigerol)?

By now, you’ve probably heard the word CBD (Cannabadiol), it‘s a growing market of a popular substance found in hemp and cannabis. This legal substance has been found to have many benefits, especially related to inflammation and immune disorders. Found in high percentages in certain strains of cannabis(hemp or marijuana), this one substance has been a hot topic the last few years.

The graphic below shows some of the known benefits of CBD at this time.

Recently, I have been doing research into the many other substances found in hemp and other forms of cannabis. Out of the hundreds we know about at this time, it seems CBG will be the next focus in the cannabis industry.

What is CBG?

CBG, also known as Cannabigerol is a newly studied cannabinoid. There are numerous cannabinoids in cannabis plants, each one of these can affect our endocannabinoid system differently. By now you’ve probably heard of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol- a psychoactive chemical) and CBD (non-psychoactive). CBGa is one of the first chemicals cannabis produces, and it’s usually converted into THC or CBD during growing or after harvest (heat and light). It’s a base chemical the plant uses to create CBD and THC.

Recently cannabis breeders have been engineering strains to maintain CBG in higher rates until harvest, which provides us with high CBG plants. This has made it possible to study this substance in recent years.

According to leafly.com CBG may have numerous benefits for our health. Some of these benefits include:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Neural protection
  • Cancer fighting
  • Antibacterial
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Increased Bladder function

Because CBG is non-psychoactive like CBD, scientists are excited to study this substance more in the future. It seems it could have some great benefits to healthcare, and could be a great addition to CBD for inflammation and other common ailments. I look forward to what the studies find, and plan on growing some high CBG strain on my farm in the near future.

Why I am an advocate for CBD

I first heard of CBD in 2012, when researching natural ways for treating my oldest son’s immune disease. My son has been using CBD since that time to help control his flare ups, and regulate his immune system when needed. All those years ago, it was illegal for my son to take the safest and most natural medicine available to him, and I was unable to voice my experiences about this substance for many years to protect my family. Now that CBD legal I am an avid advocate for the use of CBD and cannabis. This is the main reason I decided to farm hemp, to grow my son’s medicine on my own property and to help educate the public on it’s benefits. This was the first year of hemp farming in Georgia in many decades, and I am proud to be a licensed hemp grower in 2020.
